Is this cam any good?
Hi guys, in the middle of freshening up my 454 Alpha engine and wondered if this cam would be any good. Not looking for major performance, but a little would be nice!
Crane Cams Commander Camshaft CCH-306-2 134571 Application 1967-1995 Chevrolet V8 396-402-427-454 ci Hydraulic Lifters Duration @ .050" Int/Exh: 246/254 Degrees Advertised Duration Int/Exh: 306/314 Degree Lobe Seperation: 112 Open/Close @ .050" Cam Lift Int/Exh: 16 64 / 50 10 Lash Hot Int/Exh: .000/.000 Gross Lift Int/Exh: .571/.585 Rough idle, performance usage, marine performance Good upper RPM HP, 4000-4400 cruise RPM. 10.5 to 12.0 compression ratio advised. Duration is to big unless you have dry exhaust and plan on spinning it 6500 rpms. And have money to keep replacing the Alpha outdrive everyweekend.

+1 too much duration,,if your looking for off the shelf cam for a 454 my customers and i have been vary happy with the isky 270/280 mega hyd cam..you can use it with stock manifolds and has a nice loppe idle but not to bad,,has real good midrange acceleration..

Mrfix, how much horse power you getting with that cam?

Way too big of a cam for a 454. Better choice is a Crane 134241.
You need to have upgraded exhaust to run a bigger cam or you will get reversion. |

I gave these specs to somebody a while ago and they dyno'd it at 425HP at 5000rpms. I used to spin mine to 5400rpms so it was probably closer to 435hp. The cam is very close to the Merc 454/420hp specs. |
