nitrous HP performance

Anyone have any knowledge on how long a 10lb bottle of nitrous might last (button time) 100-125HP boost on stock HP500. Maybe 3 minutes?
How many rpms would that gain , so i can determine what prop to run to stay in powerband with and without nitrous.

Thought if i would only need it 5-6 times a year to play with someone, wouldn't that be better than running a blower 100% of the time for ware and tear? and no $5-8,000 cost.

Boat runs fast enough for a thrill without ,but always those coulpe you'd like to stay up with once an awhile.

Runs 85 then to maybe low 90's ??

Thanks,Randy

I'm gonna take the first stab at this....and In my opinion (we run loads of sauce in our drag/street car), I dont believe youll be able to prop for "both". When your not on the spray, and have prop "A" on for all around performance, your boat will be fine. Turn the bottle on, and youll prolly hit the rev limiter...or be turning way more rpm's than that prop can handle. Now, lets put prop "B" on...cause thats the one the bottle likes...and now your all around performance suffers greatly. You could live with one or the other...but as I said, I dont think you can prop for both. On average...a 10 lb bottle (depends where you get them filled) is around $50 - $60. Then youll get addicted to it, and the next thing you know....your not feeding the dog, youve tried auctioning off your kids, and the lights have been turned off at your house for 2 months. Alllllll to quench the addiction of the "magic mist".

Oh...and pray nothing goes wrong in your motor while on the bottle....cause the damage is devastating sir. :drink:

no offense, but by your wording and question on bottle life, my guess is you don't have a lot of experience with nitrous, so forget this idea. i've g
have 18 years of nitrous racing heads up stuff. with out typing out a novel on everything that's going to happen, what you need to do, what your going to fight, etc, i'll just some it up by saying if you want to give it a try i'd have a back up motor.

I agree with NXFirebird. If it was the "hot ticket"...everybody would be running it. :boat:

Oh...and by the way...you saying your only gonna use it 5 or 6 TIMES A YEAR is like saying "the fat girl can stay outta the cookies"...lol. :drink:

Thanks, guys, have a little use with nitrous on 2 cycle motors and have never blown one up in 20 years? Gained 1,000 rpm on most of them?
Prop wise i was thinking 5,000 rpm with no bottle and maybe 5,5-5,800 with bottle, turns 5,100 rpms now with out, works good?
Got to make sure mixture is right and good solenoids?
Just thought a light load of juice wouldn't raise rpm to much, eat to much up from bottle or damage engine if we make sure gas side is enough?

Thanks for the in put !

You are right if its not fast enough without , you'll be pushing the button always,i've done this before had a 90mph mercury outboard and it was fast enough to run around, but just wanted to say it ran 100mph so put the nos on it,this was in the 1980's,went thru maybe 2 bottles all summer.Same with snow mobiles?
Never really needed it only once and awhile, how offten do you run into a really fast boat (i know depends where you are).

Thanks again ,just a wild thought !

i've bottled everything from a mo-ped to muli-stage outlaw 10.5 cars, i'd do it in a drag boat, but not a powerboat.
by a blower, you'll be really happy.

something to try on your 2 stroke sleds, 1 quart of RC nitro to 5 gallons of avgas.... works all sorts stupid in banshee's...

As a former boat drag racer, I will tell you that there is no other engine "additive" except nitromethane, for adding torque and horsepower. However, drag boats run through the quarter in (my case) 9 seconds or less.
A 10/15 lb. bottle will last 5 to 10 passes, depending on how many stages and horsepower a given application has. So if you do that math, a 10 lb. bottle would last 90 seconds on a mild (100HP) system. Even if you got the proping and afr tuned to where it didn't hurt your motor, that won't work on a offshore/poker run boat.
You'll have something that works for a short period of time and distance, which is why N20 is perfect for drag racing, but totally impractical for offshore performance boats. Our "races" if you will, are long runs between card pickups, and long distance lake races where the first guy who crys uncle loses.
You are better off adding a mild supercharger, and that way you have extra boost all the time. Superchargers have come a long way and should not be hard on your motor if it's built with forged internals.

Steve

Thanks, Steve and NXfirebird
I was national high points champion in modified eliminator and st. louis drag boat points champion 2 times.
MRA quad unlimited ice race champion
New york snow mobile grass drag champion
Michigan grass drag champion
Done a little drag racing myself.
You guys are absolutely right ,i'd be happier with blower.

As most have said , i need to put better head gaskets on the motor if going to a blower.
Do i really need to if it has only 50 hours on a HP500 and put a whimple charger with 5-6 ibs?
I know just a matter of knowing its ok with better head gaskets.

Thanks for talking some sense into me on spending the money.

Randy
