As long as the existing wire is at least an 8AWG wire. ;)

My engine bay without the motor. wire upgrade will be easy . Fresh 540 to go back in this spring. Looking at the wiring diagram, its the orange wire fron the alt to the starter that i need to increase .

I've been running DB's 105 amp. Definitely upgrade charge wire and connectors. They have awesome affordable products!

I used to run a 65 amp on my Liberator and two batteries with no problems. Keep in mind most alternators make their rated output at 2000 rpms. If you idle a lot you will not be making full output and may want to go to a 90 or 105, but if a 65 will get the job done their is no advantage to going oversized.

I dont idle alot, but this year with fuel price$ up again, I may sit more and relax than up/down the lake.

Make sure you have a wide enough belt- if you really up the amperage you need a wider belt.

I have 2-pc2150's a full nav system (with a 4KW radar) and run a 165 AMP alternator off a serpentine belt.

Balmar is a great resource for marine alternators and information.
