Default hp500 oil and filter change

After doing some searching i am still undecided on what oil to use. Motor is a hp500 carb motor.
I have been using valvoline racing vr1 40wt. I am about to change oil and was looking for suggestions on what to use or should i stick with the vr1.
Also any recomendations on oil filter?
Thanks in advance

Valvoline makes a good oil. I would stay away from Casteroil and Penzoil, but Valvoline, and Mobil 1 are both good. I hear good things about AMS oil, but I don't run it personally. I was running Mobile 1 20-50 full synthetic, but I can't seem to find it anymore. They make a 10-50 now, which for all practical purposes should be the same for me, but I would rather just run a straight 50. I never boat when it's under 60 degrees anyhow.

I also run Royal Purple in my outdrive.

What about the FRAM HP 4? That's what I use, no problems to date?

Is everyone runnin synthetic? I have heard not to run syn in hp500, to slick and can cause the roller to slide instead of roll on the cam lobe

Have you purchased oil yet this year? I went to buy it and can't find 20-50w Mobile 1 anywhere, and Pepboys told me that they stopped making it in favor of 10-50w.

Now I'm scratching my head... I may go with Valvoline full synthetic 20-50 or a straight 50 if I can find it... Maybe Walmart has some old stock left around of the 20-50w M1???
