Default Merc exhaust elbows - stainless vs iron

I have seen mention of Merc BBC exhaust elbows that came in a stainless steel version. Since I boat in salt water, this would be a nice addition to my boat. So a few questions-
1) is the entire elbow stainless steel, or just some minor inserts on the inside?
2) are they an exact replacement for the late-model 454/502 exhaust elbows ?

Thanks in advance.

You sure the other post aren't talking about aluminum manifolds with stainless risers?

Cast iron manifolds with Merc stainless elbows were available on 502/454 I think inboards in the late 80's. I heard that the different materials caused the joint to leak over time so the stainless elbows were discontinued. I had thought about those for my 2000 454 in the past also.

Nope- they look just like standard Merc Exhaust elbows but are reported to be stainless steel. I am not sure if this is just some parts on the inside, as the outside is painted black just like iron elbows. I do not have direct access to them, otherwise I could try the magnetic test- most stainless is non-magnetic.

From what I understand the "elbows" or "risers" are entirely cast out of stainless, like the thermostat housings used on the 502 MPI motors.

They did look like they were a cast piece. They also had a different look to them from the iron parts - very easy to tell which is which. They are sometimes available on Ebay.

Yes, I see them on there from time to time, although the asking prices are quite high.
