Has anyone else had on going issues with the IAC on the 496s?

A buddy of mine has had his fail pretty much every year on both motors.

And to make matters even more interesting, when they do fail, they tend to cook the wire connector to the point of melting it into a solid blob. In fact, this last time the connector actually caught on fire. We raised the hatch and there was a nice little 3" flame rising up from the connector.

Is anyone else having similar issues?

Happens all the time to them. If you run it too long after it goes bad, it will melt it. I've been told the previous Ford Taurus, uses the same IAC, so you can actually get a new one that way, besides Merc.

Yeah, have heard from a couple of people that they go bad, but I was wondering just how often people were seeing them fail.

It seems like they would put a fuse or something inline so when they do go bad and start to draw more current, that the fuse would blow before doing any damage.

I had one go out last week on one motor, and the second one go out yesterday on the other motor. 500 hrs. What I learned is that when you get the dreaded double beep every 2 minutes, change the sensor right away. Otherwise, if you keep driving, the harness overheats and melts your connector. Certainly the beep can be coming from some other issue, so put a scanner on it to be sure. It is such an inherent problem that I carry a spare at all times now.

yes i would like to know wot year and Engine .if anyone knows that would be great ,sounds like a good plan to carry a spare.

I was watching some auto repair show and they showed how you can clean IAC's with carb cleaner to free up the plunger.

FYI, if you have burned up your connector and need another one, this is the part number for the replacement pigtail, MOTORCRAFT Part # WPT357

Ok, I bought the ford part. The connector is incorrect, so you would need to buy the pigtail also. The connector also is rotated 180 from the position merc has it in. You won't be able to plug it in with a 496HO.I imagine you could cut the retainer and rotate it, but its not worth the hassle. I'm just going to buy the merc part and be done with it.

Had Our IAC go out and it also blew out our ECM . After dealer replaced IAC , the code would not clear. Hooked up new ECM , code cleared ??? Wondering if anyone else had this issue , can the IAC actually cause an issue with the ECM ?

u can use a ford part,,,i went to auto parts store and borrowed there STADARD PARTS CATOLOG,,you can look thru the pics,,,and should find one that works,,:drink:

Since the ecm controls it and the thing is catching on fire yes it can screw up the ecm.

Ok, here's what I found....

Edelbrock part number 36017 is the exact same part as an OEM Merc part.
