I agree with Steve on SC setup. Done right it can be very reliable and provide great hp and tq. Done wrong(aka quickly) it can be a nightmare and a money pit. Remember if going NA you need more cubes to avoid higher rpm peak power.

Engines don't make hp, they make tq. hp is nothing more than a mathematical calculation. So, IMO the question is WHERE in the rpm range do you need power? Big heavy boats need it lower in the rpm range than a small, lighter boat. Just my point-o-two.
