I looked at my junk original 502 mpi oem distributer and on the bottom it does have screens and a uscg approval, so they DO certify them but I'm not sure the oem doesn't also have the screens, I doubt it has that uscg cert though!
Ezstriper-never seen or heard of a timing module in these 2 plug distributer, I know IF you buy the msd it is the same for a car and a boat and they never mention different timing curves, Smitty

Thats the one I was talking about, if you look too they sell a new one all brand new for 25 more dollars and the core charge on the re-manned is 23.99 so I would really consider buying brand new, I see it does have the screens on bottom too, Smitty

Smitty, it's CFM, - the distributors (Merc vs GM) are identical.
Screens, etc,etc.

Merc just charges a little more. LOL.

I like the Accel Cap/Rotor or any other with brass terminals. The GM/Merc has aluminum terminals.

BTW: the modules do have timing curves. 22 degrees all in by 2800rpm. Pretty good one for performance carb motors. Yes, I said carb. Have used them that way too. When used with EFI, the ECU will have it's own timing data of course.

Scott, I pretty much been saying they are the same except I doubt the autozone distributer says uscg on the bottom but neither does my braided aeroquip hose!!! As far as timing curve in the module, does it just ignore it when you plug it in a computer or what? Smitty

That.....I don't know.
When used as EFI, I have just set base timing. I have not done any programming on the MEFI's so have had no chance to check.

The advance curve in the module is the following:
RPM = Advance
700 = 11°
750 = 12.5°
800 = 13°
1000 = 15°
1250 = 16°
1500 = 16.5°
1750 = 17.5°
2000 = 18.5°
2250 = 19.5°
2500 = 20.5°
2750 = 21.5°
2800 = 22°
3000+ = 22°

my marine EST dist's that came in my crusader marine engines have NO screens in them..all original, also have one new one of the as it the special reverse rotation one that the put a extra bearing the top to absorb the load..whole story on that..on the advance deal,theses are the ones that have the 2 wire timing system w/no ECM GM has the specific modules(or at least they did) like one for a 87 IROC 5.7 TPI was not the same as a 92 TBI from a truck..was told it was all in the timing curve...now when you buy one from a auto parts store...they have the one size fits none...all the same so ??? not sure how much different they are..was told by a ign expert that one from a 87 IROC/vette 5.7 TPI were the best ones to run..and DO NOT ever run a generic auto parts one..also years ago I bought a dist fro my 91 suburban form advance auto, noticed when I put it in was totally different, pick up , module were NOT like the GMs at all and nothing would interchange ?? it failed 2 years later....

I have a Napa distributor in mine that I bought in NH on vacation, it has since been dynoed with it and we had complete control of the timing curve with the timing tables in the mefi ecm and it worked perfect (made 1115 hp) so not sure how module has a curve in it since completely controlled by the ecm in my case as it is in all the efi 502/454 mpi motors, Smitty

My problem is when it gets alittle corrosion it creates a igntion short,kills the motor.

The acdelco have made in singapore on them,but looks like it has a non corosive male pins on it, the Merc says made is usa and the 2 pins corode/rust and turn green.

good info here
http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/GM_7pinHEI.htm

I think the module is the same in them,GM 7 pin

Is there a auto app. HEI without a vacuum advance that you can pick up from Auto zone? And, if it is an older carb. motor can you wire in a module? Or is there an HEI available that has an internal module (like the Mallory one wire style)?
