Default 454 MP Computer ECU question

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and to Mercruiser fuel injection. I just purchased a used motor (serial OL352751) that came with MP fuel injection, however the ECU was missing from the package. I am trying to find an ECU for the engine so I can use the MP fuel injection, I was wondering if there are any interchangeable ECUs. Will any ECU work for a 454 with the same pin configuration, or do I have to purchase the exact one for this engine?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Chris

You should be lucky if you/someone finds you an ECU. And make sure it is the correct one (454 mag rect. heads and not 7.4L oval port/Vortec heads, or the other way around), otherwise you could of course have it re-mapped.

Your motor was equipped with a MEFI 3 controller which is no longer available.
If a used unit cannot be located your choise is a MEFI 4 and adapter harness (or do some re-pinning).

I may have found a 1997 502 MEFI-1 computer with wiring harness. Does anyone know if these sytems are plug and play? I have been told mine is a 1998.

It could be used but the ECM was located differently on the MEFI-1 motors so you will need the harness with it.
Still you will need to re-map.

I was a little to quick to answer.7.4 MPI with MEFI-3 (L-29) motors have the ecm located on the starboard side.
MEFI-3 motors also have the cool fuel system. If your motor is a 454 then location of the ecm is the same as MEFI-1 but wiring and mapping will be an issue

I'm looking at a 502 MAG MPI system from a 1996 model. Looks like I may be able to get the entire system including the fuel pump that mounts in front of the water pump. I have been told I will be able to bolt everything on and I would be ready to go.
