I just bought all new steering. I have a schematic from Latham but I'm not clear on the return line. I am going to run 2 pumps where does the return from the helm go after the cooler? Does it go back to the pump or the reservoir? If it goes to the pump do you put in a tee and use both coolers and return to both pumps? Also what is the purpose of the check valve in the tee at the transom thru hull fitting? It is capped off.

IMO running 2 pumps is more complicated than it is worth. Adds more weight and hoses. Check valves and shut off valves are needed to prevent one system from over powering the other. So you purchased all new system components and they didn't supply you with any directions or diagrams? Nothing personal but why are we always trying to re-invent the wheel? I've been involved with many a boat breakdows and none of them have been power steering pump failures. If I was that worried about a failure I would just carry an extra pump onboard, providing you do run with tools?
