Different opinions on this. Many say filter then cooler as hot oil flows faster. Others say cooler then filter as there is a chance that a tiny piece of metal could break free inside the cooler.

The research I did was about 70% saying filter then cooler.

Fileter than cooler. That way if you have any issues that might send metal through the oil system you have a chance to save the cooler.

Mine have always been set up to filter hot on engine builders' reccomendations.

If you ever have an engine issue that results in any sort of metal or contaminant in the oil, change the cooler on the rebuild for sure. You can't clean them well enough, and they are like $200-$300 depending on what you are running. Not worth risking the next motor over. Heck, 14 qts of decent oil almost costs that now... You can save your lines and fittings with a good flush.

filter then cooler, you don't want normal trash clogging cooler then reducing flow thru cooler.
