Oil filter bypass

After wiping a lobe off of my camshaft I realized that a lot of material went through the motor is it good practice to block off the oil filter bypass or will I be asking for problems

Yes - good idea to block it off - I used a frost plug.

i agree, block it off, most hp adapters dont have a bypass to block.

Don't forget to change the oil cooler also. I have seen metal everywhere. In the piston skirts, lifters, coolers, oil cooler hoses, valve guides, fuel pumps (MarkIV).

Sorry to hear about your problem, most of us have been there one time or another.

unfortinatly, flat tappit cam cores are being imported from china, and are junk,i highly recommend going with a hyd roller if it is in the budget.im rebuilding a merc 370 hp rebuild for someone now and im worried about the new flat tappet cam, even with proper break in they still go flat.if you do use a flat tappet cam, make sure you use a good break in oil and add zddp to it.

My roller cam will be here tomorrow the old cam was a crane flat tappet and I used Brad Penn and Lucas zinc additive and it still wiped the lobe off in 20 min I am done with flat tappets.

I thought the cooler was after the filter if this is the case what is the possibility of debris getting in their?

Not all are plumbed like that you might want to double check. You should probably discard the oil cooler though.
At minimum put the filter after the cooler if it is not.

mike,,i have had great luck with crower cam saver lifters, crower grinds a flat spot on the lower half of the lifter, when it spins it dumps oil on the camshaft..

+1. I was just researching these, and they seem like a GOOD idea. Looks like summit has them for just under 100 bucks a set. Rhoads has a similar designed lifter with a groove like the crower cam savers too.

I think you may be pleasantly surprised how they work.

Crower part #

i use the 66000rx3,this lifter has the heavy cuty spap ring to hold the plunger in instead of a square piece of spring wire..55-58 rockwell hardened..jobber from crower is like 90 bucks

they also have a better lifter, differant material and 63-64 rockwell hardened with mirror polished surface where the cam rides..this one is 66000p3 and jobber is around 182.00

best price is from crower unless joe knows a better place to get them :lolhit:

two names,,one was cam saver and now they call them hi lube lifters..

ps.you will loose about 5-7 psi of oil pressure,,shim the spring in the oil pump with a tiny washer to make up for it..

oil filter has bypass valve, so some junk will get by and can't guarantee cleaning will remove. every engine company has tried to clean oil coolers every way; hot, cold, forward and backward. acid and ultrasonic, still find particles that have or could killed new engine. cheapest option replace it.
