3.3 Whipple MEFI problems

Can someone clue me in on some common problems with 3.3 Whipple running MEFI.
I have solid spark and good fuel pressure (36pisg) but won't fire without starting fluid.
I plugged in my MerCruiser scan tool; no error codes and everything seems to be functioning.
I’m suspecting bad injectors, but looking for advice.

Call Dustin at Whipple....

Sometimes hard to get ahold of, but he will know...

why only 36psi on fuel?

dean campbell 06-07-2012 09:41 AM

36 psi is what the engine builder set it up at. it's on my engine build spec. sheet as 36, my other engine runs great at 36 as well. is it comon to run higher?

Shouldnt it be 45-50 ?

43psi is pretty much standard. Sounds like your engine builder set it up that way on purpose. if it fires when you give it a shot of ether, you have a fuel delivery problem somewhere. Do you have access to a set of noid lights? You could at least test to see if the injectors are being fired from the ecm

i do not have a set of noid lights, but this gives me an excuse to get a set.
any recommendations on where to buy?

Griswald 06-07-2012 10:42 AM

hate to say it, but Harbor Freight has a set for cheap and work just fine for the avg joe...

Fuel pressure should be at least 43-45 psi I beleive, but CALL DUSIN @ WHIPLE ! or the shop that installed it. It's a Whipple system.

Best Regards,

did you pull the plugs to see if there wet?are all scanned sensors in check?ie,outside temp is 70deg,air temp sensor reads 70ish degrees, same for water, those tw0 plus map sensor could flood the engine on start up.
