Default 496 Mag HO intermittent missing

I am trying to help my friend out with this problem he had over the last 2 weekends. 2001 Eliminator 496 Mag HO with Raylar internals and a whipple. When he starts it up in the mornings (cold start) it will idle ok, but when he gives it throttle to get on plane it starts to spit and spudder. He backs off to idle and repeats to have the same problem. If he shuts off the motor, then restarts it he can throttle up and has no problems the rest of the day. What the heck is up with that. I have not heard the sound of the motor, just relaying what I was told, but will try to go out with him the next outing. I don't really know where to start trouble shooting this. We may have to find someone with a Rinda to read for codes.
Any helpfull ideas out there or things to look for to help me try and figure this out?
Thanks Rockie!

So when you are talking about water, do mean in the exhaust? We sure could take the risers off and take a look for leaks. They are the stock exhaust manifolds that came on the motor. Good idea on trying to video the sound when it acts up again.
Thanks, any other thoughts?
