Setting base timing

Setting base timing
2000 5.0efi (tbi not mpi)
Need to set the base timing. Manual says to ground purple wire for carbs and hook up scan tool for efi. Well I don't have a scan tool and just want to set the timing.
When just starting the engine and timing to 8btdc (spec), it seems fine but not sure what the computer is doing not being in base timing mode.
This is a bone stock motor in a cruiser, Thanks.

I did this at the lake this past weekend. I have the jumper you plug into the port that the scan tool uses. It's basically just a jumper that puts the computer into base timing mode. I do not have it with me but I'm sure someone will chime with which pins on the plug to jump to put it into base timing.

As stated previously, use a paper clip to jumper between A & B connections on the DLC. This will release the MEFI controller from adjusting timing. Set base timing to 8 then pull the paper clip.
