A friend of mine pulled down one engine and had the timing off a little going back together. I hooked up scan tool and this motor doesn't have a "service mode". I was able to move the timing back to "zero" on the balancer with the timing light. Motor (after it is hot) will still start like it is way too fast on timing,And you have to put it at W.O.T. to put the timing in another mode so it will start. Runs great ! starts good cold.? Now tried to adjust other engine just to make sure they are the same and you can move distributor back and forth alot and NOTHING changes?? There are NO WIRES connected to the distibutor it just uses a crank or cam sensor. What am I missing here? Or why wont the other engine timing move and the one does?? Thanks !!!!! '05 6.2 Baja

You don't really set the "timing" on that type of distributor.
Section 4B in Mercruiser service manual number 31 explains how to install the distributor.
Since he pulled the engine down, Hopefully he has the Mercruiser service manual?
