The 2 beeps on the engine alarm when the boat ignition is on and the engine is running indicate you have active trouble codes and the engine is in a "guardian mode" with reduced power and not total correct operation. You need to scan the engine with a scan tool and identify the active codes and check what the trouble codes are indicating. No need to guess here, there are too many it may be. USE A SCAN TOOL!

make sure you remove the fuel pump and clean out any debris that is in there..chances are you have some blockage at the inlet to the pump...if you have ran ethanol fuel, more than likely you have some small rubber debris that the ethanol has deteroriated. Also make sure you clean out the hose that attaches to the pump in case there is more in the hose.

Careful doing so as some fuel will spill into the bilge..make sure you air out bilge very well and flush out fuel (assuming your on land doing this).

Here is an update. As mentioned changed the plugs and filled the new fuel/water separator up with gas and ran boat on trailer sunday and sounded great.

Yesterday took boat to my friends marina and here is what we discovered
- 42psi fuel pressure at idle and no movement of guage and solid fuel pressure at higher rpm's
- Changed crankshaft position sensor...dont know how you tell if bad but wanted it replaced as it was original and taking everyones advice that they go bad.
- Pulled the low pressure fuel pump off and fine mesh screen has aluminum shavings and rubber plugging a good portion of it. Assume this was in the tank obviously.
- Noticed no inline fuel filter from tank to low pressure fuel pump
- High pressure fuel pump working and cycling on and off
- Injectors are not clogged

We are replacing the low pressure fuel pump given the debris we found along with installing a in-line fuel filter as well. Also going to check the pick-up in the tank to see if that is clogged as well.

Hoping this solves my problems and will keep you posted.

I should say I am always amazed at how much debris and crap boat fuel tank builders, riggers, boat builders get in the fuel tanks and lines on new boats, but I guess I am not . This seems to be a pretty normal occurance and just glad they put screens and filters to catch the junk before it gets to the pumps and injectors. Clean the system up and if the fuel tank is reasonably clean from there you should be ok.

Here is the latest.

Tested the boat out tonight with new plugs, low pressure fuel pump and crankshaft position sensor. Also installed in-line fuel filter before low pressure fuel pump.

Boat ran great and believe my problems are now resolved.

Between the new parts and in-line fuel filter hopefully no more debris will make it up the fuel pump.

Headed to 1000 Islands this weekend to watch the Poker Run...hopefully no issues with her up there this weekend.

When my boat was new ('04 model boat with an '03 496 MAG), I had a problem with the boat cutting out and dying just as it rolled over on plane. Turned out to be a bad low pressure (lift) pump. As part of the warranty repair, Merc wanted my mechanic to remove the in-line filter before the lift pump as part of the repair (not all builders installed them, mine did). They stated these filters easily clogged with debris from the fuel tanks so they suggested removing the filter. Ray may have more background on the topic and why some boats have the inline filter before the lift pump and others do not.

With the 496's keep an extra boost pump and IAC handy. Also doesn't hur to to pop out each fuel injector and tap out the fine debri that adds up inside. And yes, new builds end up with a lot of crud/dust in the fuel tanks. also stop using 89 octane (only in a pinch) and go back to using 87 (also cheaper) fuel. remember, higher the octane, the slower the burn for longer slower combustion strokes.

Reckless32 thanks for the input. I always thought it would be better to run higher octane in these motors but more i read and hear I am going back to 87 octane pump gas with startron added to it. First thing all season with boating that will actually save me money!!
