US1 has hit it right on the head, crazy as this seems, too simple therefore can't wok. It does! I've been the punch the hole deal etc with marginal results. Talked with one of the good guys at the marina this past friday, changing oil and filter for the end of year. He said the best, less mess way was to do just what US1 just said. Crack it loose, not so much that it leaks out, let it sit for a few minutes. Not a drop leaked out, no oil mess. Sounds way to simple, but it works! Another little tip he gave me was to take the oil pump hose and suck the oil out of the two holes in the filter base, it sucks the oil out of the oil cooler, do both holes. Told me he started doing this because of customer questions/complaints that their oil had not been changed because it looked dark, from the residual old oil, said it helped a lot on his work order complaints. This guy is the only one I have ever trusted my chit to, he's an old school, common sense guy. If there is a better way to do it, he will figure it out. |
in a pinch for time you can simply remove the bolts holding the mount to the engine, flip it over (right side up). no mess / no waiting / no possibility of unscrewing too much and leaking all over and no pushing oil from the filter back into your motor (not that it really matters)... and vua-la... you're done.
