Need flywheel advice

Thought my starter was bad because it just turned over but did not engage. Turns out three teeth on the flywheel broke off. Does anyone have any advice on replacing the flywheel. Is there any advantage to going to a lighter one? It seems it should rev faster, but I don't know if that is true with a boat. Any advantages/disadvantages to going lighterd? Recommendations?

You can change the ring gear for about $40

Engine may die when you put it in gear if running a drive that doesn't use a hydraulic transmission.

What they said. Just take the flywheel to a machine shop and have them replace the ring gear on it.

Pick one up at the parts store, tap yours off with a hammer and block of wood. Heat the new ring gear on the gas grille and drop it on, make sure it seats properly. Might take 15 minutes start to finish.

i put the new ring gear in the oven at 400 deg, after about 2 minutes pick it up with a pair of plires,it slips right on.

throw the rest of the flywheel in freezer overnight also.

Thanks guys. I never had to deal with missing teeth on a flywheel before. This sound pretty simple. No

Very easy, after you get the flywheel off the motor.

cleaned up flywheel in freezer and ring gear in oven, have flywheel near oven. don't want it to cool down, then knock it down evenly with hammer. have good gloves for heat.

Also don't drop it on the kitchen floor or a bad ring gear will be the least of your worries. Also make sure you put it on the right side it came off of.

a piece of plywood or a couple of pieces of 2x4 lumber on floor in front of oven.

Sounds like loosing teeth is more of an issue than I thought. Lots of experience here. Thanks guys.

actually i just do car front wheel bearings this way. a friend used to put hubs on rotor shafts for helicopters back in conn same way. he had 10 seconds to get hub on shaft. if not down all the way, it was expensive scrap metal.

If your doing it on a damp day, wipe off the condensation off of the flywheel before you drop the ring gear on. I used to do Piston pins this way without an arbor press. We had some damp days and the condensation cooled the rods too quickly, had to take them to the machine shop anyway.

It's not that difficult
