Default GPS Map/Chartplotter???

Looking at the Garmin 176. Any comments on this or any other GPS Map/Chartplotter? Looking for something I can read at an arms length underway..

Thanks...

Check the Garmin 182. The 176 is nice but small and tough to read on a fast moving boat. The color 176 is difficult to read in direct sun. The 182 is now available in color and gray, I have last years graytone and it reads fine in direct light. The color is supposed to be good in direct sunlight but I haven't had a chance to use one. Be advised that the 182 is available with internal or external antenna but neither Boat US or West Marine carry theInternal model. I have the internal antenna mounted to the right of the dash and it works great, no antenna to mount or cable to run.

I would also recomend the 182 over the 176. I have a buddy with the 176 on his 29 Powerquest and it's hard to read at speed. Any kind of speed. Just too small. I have the 162 with the internal antenna and love it. The 182 accepts the chart chips, the 162 has to be programed using your computer and CD ROM's. I have the US Waterways and Lights loaded in mine. Seems to work fine for my purposes.

I have the 182 Color. Easy to read and works in sunlight. Overall, it is not a good as the black and white in the direct sun but it is still very good, and the added detail of color is definately worth it if you plan on buying the charts.

Make sure you get one with WAAS. The new signal is so good that you can zoom in to see what slip you are in!

Overall - Very Satisfied

I have the external flush mount antenna.

Garmin 182 , with internal ant. Worth its weight in gold.

Check the boat shows for best price.
