IMCO drive issue
Well after waiting for months to get a pair of -2/SC's.
We found out almost the hard way that drive #A176 had no provision for water to pass through it and on to the gimbal. Check your upper case to make sure its in yours...it was not in one of mine. Other than that they are awesome looking and we expect good results with the -2 shorties. |
Was that because you didn't order it that way or that they FORGOT to machine it into the case?
|
Was it the upper or lower that was not machined?
|
You have to give us more information than that. Can you post a picture????

I have a pic...at work now, I will post it later. Maybe it could be ordered that way...It was never mentioned to me at the time we ordered them?!?! In the upper gear housing is where it was missing. |
Hey you guys, how has the new IMCO SC drive been performing to date? Hear of any breakage yet? I am interested in the drives as well, but want to see how others are doing with them first. Thanks.

Back4More I need some help
Sorry for being so slow  but I'm not understanding totally what you are saying.
Are you saying the drive did not have a passage to allow water to get to the motor or are you talking about the drive did not have a passage to get water from the lower to the upper for its internal cooling system? I have about 17 hours logged on my SC. With no apparent problems. 683 hp on dyno @ 5684 spinning about 5300 = 663 hp This is a guess in red - drive loss 30 hp, - car headers to CMI's 10 hp, - accesories 10 hp = puts me at about?? 610 @ the prop. This is on my 24' cat weighing about 4800 lbs. wet. (fuel, 2 people, cooler, etc.) Need some help: is my calulation in red close or way off? |
Mine have been trouble free so far, about 12 hours behind whippled 502's. Just changed the fluid, no water or problems. I did have a few shavings on the magnetic plug but only a few.

from the lower to the upper.

from the lower to the upper.

meaning
01. no water to cool the drive 02. no water to cool the engine 03. or both :D Sorry just got to know:D ya know! I take it to be #2??? |
Raypanic,
I think finding shavings in the drive oil when pulling the plug is somewhat normal. About how much HP do you think you're running on your 38 Power Quest? And how heavy is your boat? Thanks again, Mark/KAAMA |

And how heavy is your boat? Thanks again, Mark/KAAMA I am running whippled 502MPI at about 700 hp each, Boat is abou 10K loaded. I think the shavings are normal too, There were very few and they were like "magnetic dust" not chips or chunks. I would believe it is just the gear faces wearing in. (I hope). |
02. no water to cool the engine

wee wee
thanks so much, Mike
Makes me wonder if something could happen on the passage way for the internal drive cooler also. Your problem would show it's ugly head real quick when you saw no water coming out the pipes. The internal drive cooler wouldn't be so easy to see. It would just probably burn the **** out of you when you put your hand or foot on it after a hard pass:eek: . |
Water "was" coming out of both sets of the exhaust pipes...my fresh water flush was feeding the other side with water till the rpm's got high enough to suck the hose flat.
There was no hole on the gear housing for water to pass through it. |
Back4More,
Glad to hear you found it without melting down a motor.. What did Imco say about it??? I bought some HP gears from them a few years back and they failed and should not have. But they wouldnt do anything about it.. I am wondering if they are more user friendly.. Good luck with your project.. Dick |

Re: Re: wee wee
Originally posted by Raypanic I installed drive temp gauges. If the cooler gets clogged hopefully I will see it early. |
For that kind of money I don't think you should have to deal with those kind of issues. Makes you wonder how many are like that. We know Raypanic & Back 4more had problems with quality control and others with no support on other drive issues. Alot of money with not much factory help and are they still no warranty?

Who give warr with big hp motors
Not too many
I am hearing Max will go to 850 XR drive won't hold up to big hp and they are very close to the cost of an SC. Quality problems is a different problem. It's new and the bugs will have to be worked out. The bad thing we will be the g. Pigs:mad: |
