What removes carbon deposits?

Rebuilding my motor. What works good to remove the carbon off top of pistons? Is there something to soak them in that works great?

I am know expert but, what came to my mind was OMC engine Tuner... This product is sprayed into 2 stroke outboards to clean out the carbon. It may work... it may not.. I myself would give it a try...

Transmission fluid will soften just about anything like that. I used to "fog" close tolerence engines with it to clean combustion chambers, if you burn it through it smokes like he!! of course but soaking works too. And it will moisturize your hands too.

I soak my pistons in the parts cleaner for a couple of days and then use a scotchbrite pad to clean them.

I just got done doing this to mine. I filled an oil drain pan with about 1 inch of carb cleaner, and then let them soak in that. Followed it up with a stiff nylon bristle brush, and they cleaned up nicely.

Don't forget to clean the ring grooves out real good.

I use to put some laquer thinner in a pan and let them soak. After 24 hrs of soaking, then I went at them with a Scotch Brite and a small wire brush, as mentioned above. I recently tried Xylene, and it worked even better. You can get it pretty much anywhere.....Home Depot, Lowes, ACE, etc.

Media blaster with glass beads. Tape the sides off and blast only the tops.

I like to use the crappy carb dip you can get at auto zone but I put it in an old crock pot on low and let it sit overnight. Comes off with no effort

seafoam works too.
