Wiring for shorepower??

What kind of wire do you guys use inside boat when adding shorepower??

I have seen a few different things, some looks like extension cord, others look like regular romex???? didnt think romex was used in boats...??

dogturd21 03-10-2013 10:48 PM

I think its a marine-certified stuff that looks a bit like romex. Check a West Marine catalog-they have a good electrical section.

GTOKILLER 03-10-2013 11:22 PM

Thats exactly what I thought when I first tore into my boat, Romex WTF!! then I read the coating on the wire & its all marine grade 3 wire. Still looks just like the stuff in my house :lolhit:

Marine wire is stranded, not solid.

From the shorepower plug to panel is 30A is it gauged like regular AC amp?

BDiggity 03-11-2013 09:59 AM

i think i used 8ga to my charger/inverter. bought from genuinedealz.com

ThisIsLivin 03-11-2013 03:23 PM

Braided and solid are rated slightly differently, also jacket material has different temperature ratings that effect the overall rating. It's important to check the rating for that specific wire type. The last thing you want to do is skimp on your shorepower. I added shorepower to my boat, I added a twist lock plug on the outside and a BlueSea circuit breaker panel. I added a GFI to the cabin and a circuit for the ProMariner to keep the batteries charged.

I got all the parts from a doner boat, but I need wire, do I run a #8 or #10 from round plug to panel? it's 30 amp... I am running #10 to everything else...

motor 03-11-2013 06:49 PM

10 gauge will run 30 amp...wouldn't hurt to go 8 to panel .Most circuits from the panel out shouldn't have to be but 14 gauge for up to 15 amp draw...12 gauge for 20 amp...Marine wire is stranded wire

Full Force 03-11-2013 07:41 PM

All I will have is AC, one maybe two outlets... and the charger...

Going to be doing the same project on my boat, where is the best place to get breaker panel, SS shore plug, and isolator?

For splices I like these, expensive but quick and sealed.

commandersander 03-11-2013 08:14 PM

Marine wire is silver in color....

Stay away from copper wire.....no matter what.

Many manufacturers say the marine stranded is actual "silver", but it is a silver nickel compound....mostly nickel. Any way, you have been advised properly. 14ga good for 10a/15a, 12 good for 20a, 8 for 30-40 (short run) 6 for 50a, 4 for 40a and so on.....

When kit comes to amplifiers for your sound system, consider 1a for each ten watts. 1000w =100a.

Gotcha!..my formuls has one by the sink but you have to think of people trying to plug somthing in when they just got out of the water..you never know,i would rather be safe..Also everything on my boat is grounded, gimbal housing's to engines,to trim pump's brackets to this to that and to the converter..

Full Force 03-22-2013 07:49 PM

yaaa oh well... it's better then the extension cord I had last 5 years on the Baja.... lol

Everything being grounded and having gfi outlets is two different things .And all he has to do is install one ,first in chain of outlets.

Wire is wire, it makes no difference. It is hyped so they can charge you three times as much for "marine" grade.

I disagree. Compare hardware store copper wire to a quality marine grade wire.......there is a difference

OK, good wire is good wire. Apples to apples, it just costs three times as much at a marina than anywhere else.

Can you buy tinned wire at lowes or Home Depot?
