If they are bottom mount starters? You are better off getting them from Mercruiser. They have a 1 yerar warranty. If you have a twin engine application? The port motor can be a real bear. For that particular reason, I will never use a rebuilt bottom mount starter again.

Jayl13,
I have used these guys before and had good luck.

Don't use an automotive starter. It's a shame people decide to triple the price when they here it's for a boat.
Good luck,
Dan

You can just try and hand them the starters and NOT tell them they are Marine. THe nose piece on a Marine starter is different to arrest any sparks.

Default STARTERS

Do you have Dennis Moore's book on BBC Marine engines? If you do read the section on starters, if not BUY THE BOOK. This will help answer alot of your questions. Hey, you can still get a $29 starter from Pep Boys with a LIFETIME warranty. Put one in my old truck and after replacing it a few times (4 times in 2 years) I bought an AC/Delco Rebuild. Now have 650,000 miles on the truck and over 400k on the AC starter. Starters are not easy to replace on a boat so buy the best you can, and get a MARINE UNIT. Or rebuild yours.

Did the Tech have any idea what happened to the starters? I hope all goes well. My project has been going on for 18months and I will be pulling the engine off the dyno this week. Even then it seems like the I have a ton of work to do.
Good luck!

Yeah the one was basically burnt inside from crankin and the other one welded itself together and the solenoid was just gone.
So tomorrow I should have them done and back to me to get reinstalled.
Im still shocked this dude got both starters out while still in the boat.
A 280 baja is by far the biggest nightmare engine compartment to work on.
If you have never seen a 280 compartment, go look at one.
Your first words will be "No F**ING WAY am I doing S**T to this friggin thing!!!"

Jay, your attitude and persistence is an inspiration to us all. I have followed your story with all of its seemingly never-ending problems. It's kinda like one of those old horror movies...the victim can never quite get away from the bad guy. One last scream and then they are toast.

I hope you have just escaped, my friend, and make it to the sequel. Now get this thing finished so we can see some pics of her running and you and the wife with BIG smiles across your faces.

Rick
