Anyone know if a Mk VI flywheel will work on a Gen VI 454?

Thanks tpabayflyer, Buman II, I am not sure on the flywheel, but I thought all the gen VI had the same flywheel, but don't take my work for it. Make a seperate post about it and I bet you will find out quickly.

28, I did a little digging, and it appears that the Mk IV used a different balance weight than the Gen V/VI, probably because of the square flange versus round flange. Also, the steel crank motors used a different flywheel than the cast crank motors. Pretty sure Jegs carries the correct flywheel to work with the L29 for around $80. Probably the route I will go. Thanks.

Angry Deal fell through again!

I just can't seem to win with this thing. Original Vortec that I was looking at sold before I could get to it, and now the guy who had one in his boat that I was interested in has changed his mind on selling it - wouldn't have it in time if he has his guy pull it out.

Full scramble mode now - I found a couple of other possible candidates to get me through the season, but neither are real convincing. I found a 95 model Gen V with 110K on it for $450 - this is a long block with the flat tappet cam and peanut port heads. Might work to pull the kids around on the tube and cruise the lake. Would rather have a Vortec though.

Also found a 98 Vortec that I could score for $500, but the thing has 208K on it! I have heard of these things going for several hundred thousand miles. Wondering if I would be better off with the improved oiling of a Gen VI and the roller cam setup and better Vortec heads, even with the high mileage on it.

Anyone have an opinion? I'm about ready to sell the boat and just drop the new motor in my 67 Camaro!

I just bought my third L29 the other night. these motors are underestimated by most people. I threw a crane 731 cam with matching springs and all of that in mine toped with a edelbrock air gap dual plane, proform 750 and gils and got great results. I was told I wouldn't see anything over 55 a few guys on this site, I hit 64 on gps this year in a 89 Baja sport 250 with a 23 mirage+ at 5000 rpm. i am going to try a larger carb soon to see what happens. this one I just bought is being turned into a 489 stroker.

Regalman, do you have a good set of standard pistons and rods that you want to get rid of? I have a Gen 6 shortblock that is standard bore, barely been run. Would clean up easily at standard bore. Trouble is, all the wrist pins are tight on the pistons, and to press them off would destroy the pistons.

the spare set I have are the same way, I was thinking of soaking them and see if they free up. I do not have any I would part with right now though. plus I think only 7 of the rods are still good, the engine that this one came from spun a bearing and they must have kept going for a long time, the crank is beyond useless! I sold off a 90 hour rotating assembly a few years back, I am regretting that now

I showed mine to a local machinist, and he recommended heating it up in an oven (wait until the wife is not home), and then trying to work some lubricating oil in there. He said for whatever reason that sometimes the factory does not do a good job putting assembly lube on them and they come out tight like that.

I figured that the oil just got dried up some since it was sitting for a few years with no oil in it. heat sounds good though. if you have a set i see no reason not to give it a shot.
