Do you by chance have an engine year/serial number? Carburetor or EFI?
Also, if the engine has a serpentine belt and is in stock forum, there is usually a belt routing diagram "sticker" located at the front of the engine to help guide you through the routing process for serpentine belt installation.

Your Merc service manual would be # 15 which is not available online. But pages 6A-34 & 35 in the link below should get you through it just the same.
