If I could sell all my 502 stuff and build me a decent big cube lsx engine for mine I would I think it would be awesome. Just not sure if I can get enough cash out of all of it. Good luck on all the lsx swaps though it makes for good reading and great info to see how your projects turn out.

I see that your second location is Burnside. I'd love to see this project in person when complete.

Can't wait to follow your progress.

Yeah, my parents retired to Burnside. They live on the Southfork so I keep my boat there and do almost all my boating on Cumberland. I'm hoping this will turn out great.

I talked to Procharger finally and it looks like my head unit will work perfectly with their LS swap set up. The other good news is, the only thing that moves on the accessories is the alternator and the power steering pump. So one of the Hardin sea water pumps should still work fine.

One other question....would there be an issue with running the LS1? that I bought instead of the LQ4?

TooLateVTEC 08-02-2014 04:42 PM

Only issue I can see is if you use it in salt water the block and heads are aluminum instead of just the heads on the LQ4 motor.

I think the LS1 would be the better deal with the weight savings of the aluminum block. You'll never tell the extra 18 cubic inches anyway.

What year LS1 is it, do you know?

If you don't know and you have the intake that came off the motor, look right behind where the T/B bolts to the intake, is it closed off or does it have the EGR tube going into it?

If its has EGR its a 98-00, 2001-02 didn't have EGR and that is actually an LS6 intake (came from the factory on 01-02 engines) which is good for another 15-20HP over the regular LS1 intake.

From what I was told it came out of a 99 Camaro, but I will check the intake to be sure. And zero saltwater running here!!! I wasn't too worried about the difference in engine size, I figured the Procharger would more than make up for that. Thank again for the info guys!!!

It is from a 99. Had some bad luck, tore into the LS1 yesterday finally and well, whoever drove the car it was in last did one hell of a job gernading the motor. I mean it's gone!!! Nothing to be saved. But oh well, I only had $500 in it, and they guy gave me two sets of heads and one set are LS6 heads that look to have almost no run time on them. And I got the entire EFI system as well as all the accessories. Heck, the motor was even still setting in the k-member with all the suspension still attached. I am keeping the brakes to upgrade my Grand National. Now to freshen a short block and order a cam. Get this show on the road!!!

Well those LS6 heads are worth that or more money that you paid for that whole LS1 motor, so you're still ok.

Use those heads, should be casting # 243 which is at the front or back of the head down near the exhaust port, cant miss it.

Whats wrong with the motor specifically? Spun rod bearing? Broken rod? Rod bolts from the factory are the weak point in those engines. A lot of people put wild cams in them, spin them to 6500+ RPM which then sometimes breaks the rod bolt...guess what happens next ? lol

corey331 08-04-2014 09:12 PM

Oh....dude.....it looks like a grenade went off inside it. One piston is non exhistant, and the other rod that shares that journal on the crank is completely gone. Both are just blown into pieces. Wiped that journal on the crank out and destroyed the block. Even took the cam shaft with it. But I saved everything I could off of it, and the rest is going to scrap. But like you said, I still did ok. I have some feelers out for a shortblock. Once I get that, then all my big block stuff goes up for sale and it's game on!!!

The heads that I have are 799 casting #. Reading on LS1Tech, they are the exact same as the 243 casting #.

lol holy ****.

I forgot but I think you're right the 799's are a 243 "copy". Make sure you check the valve guides on the heads before you slap them on, they are generally worn out.

Its a shame that's not an LS6 intake as well !

corey331 08-06-2014 06:02 AM

My plan is to have the heads gone through, even thought they look like new. I just want to be sure. I have a lead on a LS6 intake right now, but if not, I figure the Procharger will just cram the extra air in there, lol.
