Engine R/R Hours and Rates

Did a few searches but want to verify and get some current numbers on engine removal/replacement. Boat is a 303 Formula. Twin 454's with CMI E-Tops. Imco hydraulic steering. I'm thinking no more than 10 hours per side for R/R? What is an average shop labor rate now? $75 - $90? TIA.

I would say half that for someone who knows what they are doing. Maybe 7 hours max for both.

Sorry, let me clarify a bit here. Looking for what most shops would charge hour and rate-wise. I know there are a bunch of guys here that wrench on their own that can R/R their engines in a fraction of the time most shops will quote. Thanks.

Most shops are in the $100.00hr range. If possible pull drives and exhaust yourself and have the shop disconnect and pull engines. Save a boat load of cash.

Btw. Last time I paid I did what I said in post #4 and was charged $500.00 to pull and put back in.

Boat load...:lolhit: It is a buddy's boat. Drives and headers will not be removed prior but I agree that would save some coin.

The marina I use has a bar that goes on the boat hoist. I do the wrenching, he does the lifting $50

Yea,Techs like nothing more than to have something half apart when they get it.if Your gonna do that might as well disconnect it all then have a Wrecker come pull em.

All depends on the relationship you have with the shop. If you act like an ass with the shop then you get what you deserve.

Last year I paid 700 an engine. I didn't do anything but drop off the boat.

Think it is around 6-7 hours per.

FIXX 09-17-2013 08:44 PM

i get $90.00 per hour..alot of people say oh it takes 3 to 4 hours to r&r a engine.that does not include transfer of any parts but can be done ??.yeah thats if your a hack! and your not check drive aleignment and looking over the boat..do they also take into concideration how much my shop keepers insurance costs?? that alont would almost make a payment on a new vette..

We charge 10 hours per engine. Drop it off, pick it up. Sometimes it's a pretty easy job, sometimes it takes a contortionist to get them in and out. Price is the same either way. Labor rate is a very local thing so you really can't compare different parts of the country.

Don't forget that there's two guys working on it at times. Helping lift the hatches off, the exhaust pieces, and lifting and guiding the engine out. Then there's the sea trial which takes time. Once that's done there's a final inspection.
