Does the vapor lock appear only on the go fast boats or does it happen on cruisers with fuel injection as well.
Is there any system that appears to do it more than another ( cool fuel 1-2-3) |
As I mentioned previously, our old boat was terrible about this - never could predict when it would happen. We boat on the Ohio, and my wife was almost too scared to get in it after it happened a 2nd or 3rd time (within about a month of owning the boat).
I sucked it up and paid about $400 for the Merc fuel primer pump kit. Install was very easy and straightforward, although there were no instructions. Other than mounting the pump bracket to the stringer and assembling the fuel line, it included a harness that was plug and play. This was on a Cool Fuel 502 MPI in a 2000 Fountain Fever 27'. The problem never happened again - I sold the boat out of state, but it ended up about 20 miles away from me. The new owners have my email, phone number, and know where I live (they looked at the boat before I sold). I trust that if it has ever happened to them, they would have contacted me for advice. Bottom line - the Merc kit fixed my problem. ...it was a VERY frustrating experience. And for piece of mind, I'd highly recommend sucking it up and buying the kit. Or you could piece together something too, I guess (maybe cheaper). My understanding is that the return line doesn't meet CG requirements - but I never confirmed. I needed to get my wife comfortable in the boat first and foremost. My (additional) .02

Your exact scenario is why I started this damn thing.. I think there's a major safety issues here that could cost lives.. Ditto on the river too. I won't be back on the Ohio until this is fixed for good. Then you got guys like me bleeding high pressure fuel systems with people in the boat and a few rags, in a hurry, a few beers....nothing could go wrong there, right?
You would think there would be some Danny Davito type lawyer or firm that would pick this up.. Imagine how many would pile on.. |

All the kit does is change the pump out and move it down low to keep it cooler. The best fix I've seen is the rerouting of the return fuel line back to the fuel tank.

Am I correct with understanding that the merc pump kit is only for cool fuel models? What do those of us with VST need to do then?

This is what you need - the fuel pump kit.

Us VST guys are screwed, return lines are a shot,, I tried and it made it better but not 100%. Bob Teague also wrote an article on this as well.. I'm going with the aeromotive pump change. Ditching the VST and mech. pumps.. Eddie Young was a wealth of info on how this is done..

I've looked at those, but my sender looks like is a threaded unit. Not the standard looking sender with a flat mounting flange
Nailit, so teeing both return lines together to a single hose didn't cause any issues. I was afraid there would be some type of fighting between motors doing so. That would make it so much easier I bought the kit for my 25ol b/c I had vapor lock issues, when I bought my 33, I came across a thread from Eddie that fixed the issue. Since I had an extra bung in my tank, I tried the return line fix so I didn't have to spend another $7-800 to fix this one. The kit came with a booster pump that has a y connection to split power from the pump in the cool fuel. Pump screwed right into filter head and fuel line from tank. Save your money and run the return lines. I used 3/8 marine hose and fittings. Easy!!! |
