Then I hook up my oil changer pump to the dipstick and it pumps out the oil in about 2-3 minutes. But it never quite gets it all out as I usually can only add 6 1/2 - 7 quarts of oil back. If I hook up the pump to the drain hose, I should be able to get most of it out.
Yes, the dipstick method always leaves about that much in there. The drain tubes are the only way to go, but I don't feel as though pumping it out through the drain tubes is required. All depends on your time availability though.

These drain hoses are the best things since throw away napkins

I totally agree - Best thing since throw away napkins.

I love the ability to run the boat - get the oil good and hot and then a long extended drain. I pop a hole in the oil filter (top mounted) and try to get everything out -- very inexpensive maintenance.

You know I've always thought that the dip stick method leaves some oil in there -- However, I've read a couple of articles that point to just the opposite-- the oil tube is at the bottom of the pan- where the drain plug is usually a little up on the pan to allow for the plug/threads-- ergo a little more oil that doesn't drain

Personally, I think it is splitting hairs - either way is good

You're probably right, but time availability is definitely a factor especially with three engines to do. Plus, when I run the pump, I can really tell when the crankcase is empty from the sound of the pump versus waiting for the slow trickle to stop. 2 out of the 3 engines in my boat have the drain hoses and the third doesn't... why I have no idea.... but I will be able to compare which method is more thorough in getting the oil out.. is it spring yet??

My hose end was 1/4 npt and I bought a cheesy, $30 harbor freight dc electric pump that I clip to the battery and drain the oilin 1 minute..... Did it first to m wellcraft 7.4 when I rebuilt it and put be on the donzi as well.... Makes changing oil almost fun! Beats the messy, vacuum pump deal for sure!
