installing connecting rod bolts

If you're talking about the type that uses a nut on the bottom end, yes they're pressed in (sort of). The shank near the top is a tight fit in the hole and it's usually knurled too.
If you have to replace them, just press them out and press in the new.
Don't think about letting used rod bolts stay where they are because one will break when you leats expect it. I know.
Had a friend that was my partner in a race car. During rebuild one of his chores was to replace the rod bolts. One day I went to work on it and found he had buttoned up the bottom end and the oil pan installed. I was supposed to do that.
We installed the motor, fired it up and during cam break-in it tossed two rods and punched a hole in the new oil pan. Total run time was about 5 min.
I found out he went drinking with the money I gave him in place of buying the new rod bolts.
We haven't talked since.

Make sure that if the new bolts have a fillet under the heads, that the rods have clearance for such. You want to have the head of the bolt tight against the rod, not binding from the fillet. Kapesh?
