guys I need help please 496 ho surges almost dies...
2003 baja outlaw 496 260hrs I had a stater go out where I turned key and just heard motor whinning never heard grinding ect had shop replace starter said they tested it sometimes it would kick out sometimes wouldnt. Well they had to take the manidold off that engine to replace it....
My problem now that wasnt there before the starter replacement. Engine starts up fine cranks fast ect idles normal but once to temp 155-160 and running there normal for 15min or so the engine starts to idle down rpms then drop fast then it revs back up like someone goosed the throttle butonky revs back up to where it was at. It does it in gear and at higher rpms. Ive changed fule filter sep and tested fuel psi at idle hot even taking vacuum line off regulator psi stas between 43-45psi. What else can I check? I csnt find a shop local had a trip planned this weekend
Please all help would be appreciated thanks

Is it beeping and/or throwing a code?
I had a similar issue:

Details are in that thread that I linked. I replaced several things, but I am fairly certain it was the Crankshaft Position Sensor.
If you have beeps/alarm, don't spend any money on parts until you get it scanned.
The beep is a "Check Engine Light". The codes are stored in the computer.
Your issue could be the Crank Sensor, Cam Sensor, or IAC. I am leaning toward IAC.
www.rinda.com
Buy a scanner. (I feel like I post that on every 496 problem thread) The $500 it cost is TOTALLY WORTH it in the long run so you can troubleshoot it yourself in the middle of summer (like now) while you are waiting to get scheduled, plus the cost/time of taking the boat in. You can rent the scanner out to your friends to recoup costs.
If you have a pair of 496s, you should keep a spare IAC on the boat anyhow.
http://www.rockauto.com/ to buy one. (There are dozens of threads on this, common issue. Sometimes the bad IAC can fry the connector and/or the ECU as well.)
Fuel issues typically DON'T throw codes as there is no real measurement for fuel pressure on the 496s in the computer. IF you have issues and NO beeps/codes, then it's often a fuel problem.*
*sometimes the Crankshaft Position Sensor goes bad and does not throw beeps/codes

Depends on what town you are in.
Do you have a Mercury Dealer? They will likely have an IAC, but it will be Mercury pricing.
Look on the RockAuto website. Check the part for your 8.1L Mercruiser. It cross references to the same IAC for:
Ford: Winstar: 2001-2002 models
Lincoln: LS 2002-2002 models

You should be able to buy it from Advance given the above info.
Your welcome.

Well installed the new iac and I thought it was fixed because it didnt do it for the longest time....idling out of marina got on plane for 15 min or so then came back down to idle in next marina and it surges once doesnt seem to be doing it as much as it did last weekend which was every couple minutes now this engine is running a little hotter climbed up to 180+ on plane
