Some interesting points here... Joe did you ever make a move?
Did you every get to pros and cons of MSD vs Daytona... I see it comes with a coil and works with my merc distributor. |
Rob , I purchased the Daytona boxes. So did icdedpeepees and mike Tkach. General consensus was the Daytona box was the way to go over the mad version. For a couple reasons

If you have a few minutes to discuss sometime, give me a call

I have been using the Daytona CD-1 Marine, and Wego A/Fs for years. I have mentioned; these components in the past. As a mater of fact; Chris S. designed the Crane Boxes. Cane had there own criteria, that"s why the Daytona CD-1 is what it is.....and is much better than the old Crane design.
You can select already set timing curves or use the 2 or 3 D programmable curves. Yes you can use a 1,2,3 bar map, TPS also. It also has the data logging. Works excellent with the Merc Thunder bolt, the reluctor wheel has to be drilled for phasing. Had a drilling fixture made years ago to accomplish this. You can also use a idle stabilization that helps increase timing, at shifting into gear and will maintain rpm. You have to shut the engine down for your timing mapping and data downloading, unplug a weather pack in plug in a usb interface cable. It's a excellent match up if you don't have a EFI set-up, you can map your timing along with data log. I wouldn't advise buying a MSD distributor, I would us a Merc Hall Effect, over magnetic. Yes, I'm a W.D. on these units all of these units and the pricing is set by our contracts of selling prices set by Daytona Sensors, to protect all Dealers. |

I'm not sure what the failsafe is on them. But in reality , a piece of dirt in a carb needle and seat can burn up a motor. A fuel pump failure can burn up a motor. Moisture in a distributor cap causing crossfiring can burn up a motor. A thousand things can fail and take out a motor.
Its like asking , what happens if my lifter wheel falls off on my roller lifters ? Ehh, I'm gonna stick with flat tappet because no roller wheel to break. These boxes do sort of the same thing an ecm does on a fuel injected car or boat. If they were to fail internally , or not do what they are supposed to you can have issues. Maybe that's a question for the guys who designed these boxes as far as what can fail in them and what are the effects of it failing. Does the daytona sensors box have options for knock sensors ? Allen, the co-owner of Daytona, talked with me when they were developing the Marine box, we talked about the knock sensor as before, not many of the other engine builders wanted it and I believe; it wasn't available anymore from Anson. It would have been a piggy back as before, when Livorsi, used it they used a gauge to read it. I still have 2 kits on my shelf. I spoke to Allen, just about being able to change timing and down load data,in real time; it makes the internal hardware, very expensive and complicated. |
