8' beam into 7'9" garage door

Does anyone have any clever ideas as to how I can get mt 8' beam boat into/through my 7'9" wide garage door? Plenty of room once it's through the door but??? Tilt on side maybe? Anyone ever done this?

Crude Intentions 11-07-2014 08:30 AM

Wider door opening or trim 2 inches off each side of boat.

MILD THUNDER 11-07-2014 08:36 AM

Don't think you have a whole lot of options Nugget.

Crude Intentions 11-07-2014 08:38 AM

Is this a measured 8ft from widest point of each side of boat on trailer or are you going off specs?

Sydwayz 11-07-2014 08:40 AM

1) Pointy end first.
2) Speed*

*If at first you don't succeed; add more speed.

buck35 11-07-2014 08:47 AM

Install larger door, you will be happy once you do

ThisIsLivin 11-07-2014 09:04 AM

Now you know why I put 8x9 doors in my garage when I built it.

1 MAIDEN AMERICA 11-07-2014 09:23 AM

A friend of mine cut a chunk of trim out to clear. He did it in a way that the trim goes right back on after the boat's in/out. Dowels or something.

Mr Maine 11-07-2014 09:26 AM

1. Try greasing the door frame.
2. Heat door frame to expand it, put boat in freezer to shrink it. Quickly put boat in.

Thanks to all so far...some very good observations and solid ideas, real solid... I was thinking I could put it in stern first. using a motor lift I could lift the stern and possibly tilt the boat enough to get it through. no motor on it right now and it weighs about 1700 dry. The trailer is no where near as wide. The 8' is an actual measurement and I need to find 3 inches. I figured someone on here must have had a similar issue. I need to get it in to work on through the winter and then haul it out in the Spring. Don't tell me I have the best idea so far as to how to do it...that's not good for me and doesn't say much about all of you out there who I know are always being thrown "how the heck are we going to do that" problems all the time! That's boating ! so really...try a little harder and help me get this in my garage! Thank you...peace my friends! If we can make 18 foot boats go over 100mph and put twin 250's on a 20' boat, this should be a piece of cake. Try harder!!!

97FASTech 11-07-2014 09:55 AM

Just don't let this turn out to be one those "Here, hold my beer" moments!! LOL

Sydwayz 11-07-2014 09:58 AM

We need to find the pictures of the rotisserie that 'glassdave' made. It's in the Fiberglass & Paint forum somewhere. I'll ask Dave if he can post it again if I can't find it in a minute.

Realistically, I like the remove the door trim, maybe take the rubrail off if not too much work, should give you the 3 inches.

What is the distance between the 2 metal tracks the door rides in? If you can clear between them it shouldnt be too hard.

Most doors are trimmed around the inside of the opening with a 2x6. Then a 2x4 is nailed on the flat on the interior of the buiding. the edge of the 2x4 is held fush with the inside of the opening / 2x6. If you can remove the door weatherstrip then remove the 2x6 then notch the 2x4 you may make it work. If you have metal trim of course you will have to remove that first. Really not as bad as it sounds.

Reassemble with screws so it will be easy to take apart again.

Sell boat, buy a 24x7

Um, is this a trick question? I always hated those back in elementary school!

I guess there's always a way to do the impossible, but sometimes isn't it just easier to put it somewhere where it fits? (The boat, that is!) ;)

Take a string 8 feet long, see how far you must raise it to clear sides, if you have the headroom build a ramp for one side and carefully back in.

Perhaps you could rig something like this up to do this on your own trailer?

BUT, if you plan on installing the motor/drive and other stuff while it's inside over the winter, how do you plan to get it back out?

Black Baja 11-07-2014 12:18 PM

Sounds like a good excuse to build a bigger garage.

sea6 11-07-2014 12:25 PM

Maybe air pressure adjustment on trailer tires, up on one side and down on the other. Or a running start.
How much are those tilt trailers, like 100 K?

Astroglide.......You can park a Cadillac in a dog house with that stuff.

I think you are screwed....and not in the warm & squishy way either.

Can you pull the 2x6's off of the side of the opening? There is 3" I would only do that if it is going to stay inside for a while.

Just take a router to the door frame at rub rail height.
Then fill it in with wood putty when you go to fill the joint.
:D

It sounds like he made something like I'm thinking of that can rotate the boat up on it's side a bit. I would be very interested in learning more about this "Rotisserie" as you call it. Thank you, Don

Now we are talking...some excellent ideas flowing in along with the ship in the bottle, pointy end first, lubricant etc. (which I am enjoying also. But now I have a combination of things that I think might work. The 8' string and angle required with ramp, a little air out of the tires, removing some of the door structure temporarily, removing the rub rail along with a few other good ideas and I just may be able to pull it off, or in this case in. Keep the ideas coming, a plan is being formulated. Thanks

Thanks, no motor will be added after restoration work when I pull it out in the spring. Boat is in Maine, motor in NJ. I hope after a successful restoration to reunite the two in NJ in a much bigger shop[QUOTE=Sydwayz;4215673]Check this thread out:

Might I suggest the liberal use of high explosives to increase the door opening size? Not only practical, but fun too!!!

Dads Nuggets 11-07-2014 04:10 PM

I do appreciate all the ideas and believe it or not I think, based on all you guys have shared, I now have a plan. It will incorporate most all of your suggestions...even the lubricant if needed. Any more ideas are certainly welcome. Thanks to all ... I enjoyed and appreciated every idea...some were very funny...good stuff.

I did exactly what you are inquiring about. Had a third car garage with single 9' door. Factor in jams and opening spec was 8'10" wide. At the time, I had a 22' Crownline that measured 8'6" wide with tandem axle trailer. Once the tandem cleared my small 2" of space on each side opening, I was able to angle towards wall and back right in. I wanted to upgrade to a 32 sunsation, but backing in with those specs would be difficult, so I decided to widen the opening. My exterior is brick so I called in a mason to cut 6" of brick on each side so I could install 10' door. After the mason replaced and reworked some of the cut bricks, I had a buddy extend the header and installed jams. Now I have a 10' wide opening that looks original to the house. The only giveaways is the few inches of space where the driveway doesn't extend on one side and the two brick columns in between third door are 6" less in width when compared to the column on the other side of two car door. Nobody has ever noticed because it is so minor. If you can't upgrade to a 9 or 10 foot door, you may have to go custom sized

formula223 11-07-2014 04:17 PM

here is a few idea, not sure what type of boat it us, sounds fairly light at 1700lbs, if the thickest point is near the top of the gunwales, you might be able to squeeze it kind of like squeeze a balloon in the middle by using ratchet tiedowns. also by putting one side of the trailer on a ramp, and letting air out of the opposite side tire or removing the tire, it might change the angle of the boat one side higher and one side lower to give you enough clearance, also wood gives a little so if the garage is wood it might help by twisting (moving one side of the boat higher and the other side lower to give more space as it comes in) just a few thoughts

phragle 11-07-2014 04:21 PM

you said its about 1700 pounds. strip every bit of weight off it you can. Go to store and get keg of beer, a bunch of burgers and dogs, fire the grill up and call everyone you know. then with a bunch of guys pick it up off the trailer and man handle it into the garage twisting and tilting as necessary.

MichiMike 11-07-2014 04:25 PM

Bigger door is the answer. mine will fit width but not length. So tonight I travel with boat to the big barn 40x80 for the winter.plus side,I'm bringing back the snowmobiles.SAweet

My father did this with a truck he had just bought and brought home.

Neither the truck nor the garage won. They both lost.

LOL....what a mess !

Heh, taking your thought one step further, how about ramps for one one side of trailer ? Obviously and up ramp and down ramp.

I want video !!!!

My dad broke everything he touched.

He was the type that could take down a barn by looking at it.

God bless'm.

Myself and my older sister where left to repair it. If we didn't he would brake out the glue and duct tape.
We had a nice work area in the basement with many tools. He wouldn't touch the tools, he'd reach for his famous shelving (on the right side) that consisted of about 200 different glues and several types and colors of duct tape.

She became a electrical and biological engineer.

I own a shop and design some parts.

Thanks dad !
