1994 mercury racing hp 465?
I am looking at a boat to purchase that has these motors. Im having a really hard time finding any decent info on these motors.
Were they any good? Reliable? Valve train issues like its succesor the hp500? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mike. I have found some info. Just not any real world experiences or reviews like on the other motors. The boat they are in is a formula 336. Its supposed to be 100% original with low hours. Im going to inspect it tonight and will know more after i get the HIN and make a call to formula.
First bits of info point to a mk IV 502 with a flat tappet cam and dual rise intake. Searching mercruiser parts through bam point to it being a gen V 502 block. Both variations are said to have 445 hp at the prop.
Any other additions are welcomed.

Had one in my '94 Fever.
Hyd flat tappet cam that wasn't a stranger to reversion with the OEM GIL/Merc exhaust
GM Dual plane high-rise intake with Holley 800
Other than those 2 items, same critter as the 500 which replaced the 465 in '95, at which point the cam and intake were changed. I 'think' the HP500 in '94 and previous, was actually the 540 Bulldog.

This engine was started in 1990 thru 1992 and in 1992 (serial run) at some point was then the Gen V version thru 1994 . Mercruiser put out a SB to bump the idle up to help against water reversion. It helped somewhat but did not cure those problems completely. Back in the day we seen the 465 in Fountains quite a bit.
