I've used a few sets of them. They worked great and really look sharp. Although, they are a little pricey, they look so much better than the rubber ones. Also, the rubber ones tend to stay open after some run time. These won't do that.

Ayuh,.... When I built my thru-hulls, I built ssteel shutters, Inside the pipes,...

After a couple years of listenin' to the rattle of metal on metal, I took 'em apart, 'n bolted tiny tabs of rubber millbelt to 'em,.....

Been nice, 'n quiet ever since,....

cigboat1 01-20-2015 10:36 AM

Come on -----$650.00 for two sets of flappers, Whoooooo Baby !!!!:eek::eek:

Apart from the cost, one of my concerns was whether the mechanical hinge could corrode and start to get stuck in the up position. With the new tails I've just bought, I will not have an internal flapper so the external is the only thing thats going to block water from coming in...

these bring to mind the old saying about screen doors and submarines...

Brandonb_05 01-20-2015 08:52 PM

You can put screen doors on submarines as long as you flex seal them, billy Mayes did it, I seen it on T.V. :lolhit:

VoodooRob 01-20-2015 09:43 PM

Does Hardin have a patent on that design, is that why they are so expensive?

brian41 01-21-2015 06:31 AM

We called them to have (4) 6" flaps made and they where quite pricey.

I know.... kinda ridiculous actually....they piqued my curiosity because I need to replace my external flappers and they look pretty nice... but it would cost me $1,000 to put these on..

jamontes 01-21-2015 08:18 AM

Pay to play... Pay even more to look good while playing.

cigboat1 01-21-2015 09:44 AM

Try your local good ole boy truck stop area they sell them in all different sizes------------------------Probably $39.95 for two !!!!!!! And guess what they are stainless !!!!!

Jim :flag::flag::flag:

Just checked and there all kinds of flappers you can buy CHEAP all over the place and EBAY ----They have them for $19.74 ....I am positive some one can make these work with out being a brain surgeon

ICDEDPPL 01-21-2015 05:06 PM

I`d totally be a buyer at a reasonable cost but at those prices I just feel like a fool. I`m going internal flappers this round I believe.

Who the hell can have a conversation with you with that avitar. I have a idea. Just post nothing in all threads so we have something to look at.. Not sure, but did you win best avitar? Because if you didn't you should now. Sorry for this interruption .... Back to the flaps.. Look awesome but I think unnecessary . Wow :)

Hey ICDED... I am replacing my existing tailpipes and exhaust tips.. they currently have these internal flappers that install from the outside. They're on a carrier assembly and slip in from the outside and you bolt them to the exhaust tip. Dana Marine was the only company that made them. I just bought all new ones last year and now I don't need them... This is a picture of one of the ones I replaced but you get the idea... let me know if you'ld be interested in these.. I don't need them anymore.. I'm going with full length tails...

I know.. I'm going to keep asking him questions so he continues to post in this thread...

On the original topic... I've decided that even I who drops stupid money on all things marine, can't justify these...if they were like $200 maybe, but $1000 for exhaust flappers is just nuts...

Totally agree .... With both subjects

Drew555 01-21-2015 05:38 PM

Hyfive are you doing all new exhaust?

Diamond Dave 01-21-2015 05:38 PM

Yes, on the back motors only though. Removed the Silent Choice completely, pulled the engines to get the Y-pipes out.

Replacing these:

with these:

the new ones dump the water about an inch from the tip...

Drew555 01-21-2015 07:01 PM

Headers or manifolds? We cut open a set of cmi headers to find out that they are not well manufactured like they say. There is not a full water gap around the pipes making hot spots... No good. #2) the inner exhaust halls are not made of high quality stainless. We know this because a magnet sticks to it.#3) the leaking headers rotted from the exhaust side out. Meaning the salt water didn't rot the pipe. The exhaust side rotted out. We are thinking that the carbon build up deprived the stainless of O2 causing it to fail. Besides the fact that the inner pipe is low quality stainless . It made my mind up to go with stainless marine manifolds. Me and the guy next to me with his hustler. Besides being half the price it's a far better product.

I'm not replacing the headers; just the tails. I had a bad reversion problem on the back two motors due to the Silent Choice. I eliminated the Silent Choice and had CMI make me new full length tails. I pressure test my headers religiously.

Drew555 01-21-2015 07:07 PM

How many years on the headers?

Do you mind me asking how much those were and where did you get them?
Wanting to do the same, screw silent choice.
Also how long did it take to have them made?

ICDEDPPL 01-21-2015 09:28 PM

Hi5FIVE78, I have 5" exhaust, are the flappers removable from the tails to transfer over ?

$4200 for two sets of tails. CMI made them and it took about 3 weeks but that included Christmas week when they were closed, so about 2 weeks.

about 225 hours but they are 2008 vintage and improved design.. I pressure test them every 10 hours...

Yes, they are removable. If you look at the picture, you will see two locknuts on the inside of the exhaust tip; those two screws that are covered by the external flapper get removed and it slides right out. These are currently in a 4" exhaust tip though...

sorry Neil, had to say it..... they are nice flappers though..... seriously though, maybe they would discount if many were purchased together.... I might be in for two.....

Diamond Dave 01-22-2015 10:30 AM

Funny I received a bulk email from Hardin about exhaust tips last night what a coincidence lol. Although the tips were only priced at $89-99. A sale of one of the stainless flappers probably pays for their whole inventory of exhaust tips for the year lol.
