Our dyno operator is well aware that the engines are not WOT drag racing engines and paid special attention to putting a load on the engines at part throttle to simulate a real world environment. The CFM carbs on those engines needed a bit more fuel at 3500 rpm under load.
I NEVER said tim HAD to have his carburetor modified by anyone. I simply said he should call and talk to the local and well respected carb guy. You attempted to lump ALL custom carb shops into one basket because, according to you, they all are drill bit happy hacks. Part of the reason I think it would be prudent to establish a relationship with a local guy is that, being monetarily limited, tim is going to be field tuning whatever he buys (or if he has his exsisting carbs gone through) on the water. I'd think it might be nice to have a "phone a friend" option while tuning said carb. |

Tim, where did you find that info? Are you saying the 4500 carb is 1.5'' taller than a 4150? I always thought they were the same height flange to flange? Or are you referring with the intake as well? Which intake?
"The 4150 is 3/4" lower and most manifolds for 4150's versus dominators are about 1/2" lower. So the Dom will probably end up an inch to 1.5" higher overall" going off that info looks like carb and intake make it taller.. |

Tim, paging thru some catalogs here. Intake manifold flange heights.
Weiand Team G = 5.96" Professional products hurricane 4150=6.16'' Professional products hurricane 4500=5.88" Victor JR=5.90'' (set up for a 4500, but if wanted to run a 4150, adapter would be needed) Dart = 6.125 '' The carbs themselves, whether 4500 or 4150, should be the same height, flange to flange. So just for conversation purposes, by swapping to a 4500/victor jr or 4500/hurricane, you'd gain 1/4 inch of clearance. Most flame arrestors i've seen for 4150's, have a lip, most 4500's are flat. That there may be another 1/4-1/2 depending on the arrestor. |
So the 4150 is actually higher?

FF, I understand your situation but I also read on 1 of your other threads you were NOT going to go on the the water this year if it meant cutting corners. Yes carbs work and have for years but not the best answer anymore when it comes to HIGH dollar builds. $25,000.00 is not a low dollar build even for 2 engines, I am just showing you options and ways to PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT.
I happen to be holding a Holley EFI to Whipple marriage today for a pontoon boat. Customer already had a wackedout Whipple tune on 555 ECU that we could not get straightened out so best thing was to move to a much better system at an additional cost just to PROTECT HIS INVESTMENT. Did I mention I am a Holley EFI dealer, installer and dyno tuner ? I do carbs also but I do not work for beer......sort of. MT, Just trying to understand your agenda here, I see some others with the same questions. I understand you are trying to help but with your onslaught of info and consistent back and forth I try to avoid your posts. |
Brian I don't see buying a good carb skimping on my builds to be honest...
