Before u buy have a full survey done and also a compression test and a leak down test done on both motors that will tell you alot about the boat.

Defineately agree, had triple 500 in my last boat,98 outerlimits, checked valve springs around 150 hours found 1 broken replaced them all, checked again at 300 hours again found one broken, replaced them all again. If you go with the 200 hour boat, change the valve springs, not hard to do and will be money well spent.

why not buy a 35 with 502s or 496HOs? trouble free boating for a couple of miles less.

I have not ruled out 496s or 502s. Black Mercurys are just fine and every boat I own has a Mercury on it or in it. The 454 EFIs in my 29 are and have been great. But I want any added performance the 500s provide and if the one in Canada that had 500s with 671 blowers on it was still available I would be going there first. He sold it the day I got my passport.

The carburated 500's are the ones that had the early problems with valve springs. The 500 efi did not have these problems. This is not to say that you can ignore routine maintenance but they didn't break springs like the hp 500's did.
