I have used PVC as well..works great rots, we are in the sign/graphics business and use them as sign blanks and come in a bunch of thickness's

When I was redoing my formula, I used starboard. Not good for painting or gluing but mine wasn't any of that so it was a perfect choice for me.

Sorry man, couldn't help myself!

We use Celtec for all our side bolsters at work (Tiara Yachts). Super easy to work with, mold and algae resistant chemicals built in, and will most likely last as long as the boat is in service.
