Default how many quarts?

I have a mark IV 454 that has the mercrusier cast aluminum pan p/n 47552 on it but the previous owner put a universal dipstick on it that I dont believe is accurate. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this setup. Only info i can find is its a 7qt pan. If it is does that mean the engine takes 7 qts total or 7 1/2 qts due to the filter and cooler?

I have a 7 qt stamped pan. When I do an oil change I buy 8 quarts. 7 go in the pan and most of the other goes into prefilling the filter.

Drain oil, change filter, fill w/ 8qts, mark it, run engine for a bit, check oil, add accordingly till at previous mark.

yes,it will show slightly over full but after you start it and wait a few minutes after shutoff it reads to the full mark.

Mike - novice question. In checking the oil - should the boat be in the water or is on the trailer/lift etc., ok to get an accurate reading??

thanks
