Just bought this boat. It was wandering at high speed . When I slowed down the boat pulled very hard and fast to the right. There is play in the steering wheel. I am getting a new steering cable and helm installed right away. Could there be other problems that are causing this also?

i had a 27 Nova did that. there is a lot of play somewhere. get 1 person on the wheel and another looking at steering in engine bay. work wheel back-forth and find the slop. mine was the nut that screws cable into steering valve. it galled the threads so it was screwed tight but still had 1/4 inch of play in the cable-to-valve mating point. if wheel is moving and no movement of steering at the back end, it is where cable and helm meet. then get somebody to move drive back-forth while watching the tiller arm from inside. i am not saying you don't need a cable, but you NEED to know what is wrong before throwing parts at it...

Thank you. The marina where it is getting worked on said the helm and cable are bad. I know they looked all over it. Will that make the boat wander and pull very hard and fast to the right when slowing down? It pulled so hard right it was scary. The motor is a supercharged 454
