Definitely looks like blown head gaskets between several cylinders. Now that could be the result of or a contributing cause to the detonation. Considering that this engine has a history of blown head gaskets, I would take a careful look in that direction. What kind of head gaskets were used on it? Was the block checked for straightness? Heads milled?

Well I have the older style with the fiber washer and spring. They don't look like fun when it comes to reinstalling the engine. I have no room in the engine bay. The 502 had to get turned 90 degrees then pulled straight up.

I wonder if it is broken or what the story is with it. The previous owner mounted a new transducer off the back of the transom (witch don't read for chit!.) Any way to test them? Dose most depth sounders use the same transducer? http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...psdhqoboqo.jpg And well dam it. The car has to sit out side now :( running out of room in the garage http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps9hx1grq2.jpg This I found interesting wiling looking at the 2 engines. Mine (1994 model) has Mercruiser tag http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...pshquy7srn.jpg The other 502 EFI I bought that was in the 1995 Scarab. No tag.. There isn't even the rivet holes for the tag. I'm sure it is stamped on the computer/electrical box, but what is up with this? Is it in a different location? Also I want to use my knock sensor (looks brand new compared to the other) Anything special that needs to be done to the threads or just a simple remove and re screw in? http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...pskxifqdqs.jpg Tonight the tare down will start! |
placing the fiber washers and springs... The 12 year old kid down the street who is always wrenching on bicycles.... Pay him 10 bucks and a boat ride. You will make make his year.........

Could have been caused by going lean and sticking the top ring. What broke is the weak point of the piston. Time to do a complete rebuild. Melted a few pistons in my days.
|
the heads may look good but I would bet the seats took some hits from the ring pieces going thru.heads need to be looked at.

when you go to reinstall the engine glue the fiber washers in with weather strip adheisive..then put grease on the spring spacers to hold them in place..

That thing got hammered.
From the pics it looks like it may be a mls gasket , if someone put those in without proper prep water can creep in and take a chunk of tbe piston out which hammers things up nice . The prior gasket swap may have come about due to the common 502 block filleth with silt -sand. Pure speculation and food for thought ofcourse |

No they were not blowen in between any cylinders. Proper prep work and Ra #'s for heads and block. Not my first rodeo using MLS's ;) |
