Marine Machine steering cylinder seals
Need help guys. I have a Marine Machine steering ram that is leaking. I took it apart. The wiper seal and the seal behind that is bad. How do I get the seals out? There is a brass spacer between them. I don't want to damage anything trying to remove them.
Anyone have any seal part numbers? Thanks in advance ! |

It's a pain. Be careful and remember which way all seals and wipers face. I removed them with a pick and had to use a heat gun (low heat) to make them soft and pliable to put them back in. The receipt with the part #'s is for a Qty of 2 rams.

Thanks for the reply Rookie. I saw your thread. Those part numbers work for Marine Machine rams? Looking into the end cap that the shaft slides though. There is a wiper, part of the stainless steel cap, seal, and brass bushing/spacer. the brass bushing doesn't need to get removed? I can carefully work the seals in there.
Wouldn't there be 4 square o rings for 2 rams? |

He has them, 95 bucks. He needs a pic of the cylinder to send the right kits.

On my old 30' Spectre, I took the leaking ram off and went to a local hydraulic shop in Springfield, MO. He rebuilt it right in front of me with new O-rings and seals off the shelf for a whopping $7. The seals and o-rings are common parts, it never leaked again and worked better than ever.

Adding to an old thread. Had to have both my MM rams rebuilt this year. Seals for both were about $50.
Here are the quantities and part #'s for the seals needed for one ram [U-seal] (1) U12-0.75-25B , [U-seal] (2) U12-1.25-SQB, [Oring] (2) 568-130, [Wiper] (1) D-0750 https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f36d0625c4.jpg |

I had a local hyd shop do one of them. It was about $200.
The seals are standard part numbers and can be ordered online from any hyd parts store Second one started leaking a couple months later when boat was already on the lift at LOTO. I got the seals from the same place that did my 1st ram. John(friend of mine) at The Bravo Shop rebuilt the second one while I was there. It is actually very simple to do. Hardest part is getting the rod end off. Needs some heat because they are locktighted on. Unfortunately one of the end cap O rings cracked and started leaking shortly after. I fixed that myself. I wrapped about 4 layers of duct tape around the end cap and tube to protect the SS and used 2 pipe wrenches to unscrew the cap. If I had any issues again, I'd do it myself. Its not hard at all. |

Dean,
I have a seal kit you can have that is for a marine machine setup. My new boat is ITS so I won’t be needing it. Let me know if you want it. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...223537415.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...a59e987d9.jpeg |

Marine Machine Ram needed
I have a 35’ Cigarette Cafe Racer with Marine Machine steering. The port ram has a “pit” in the rod and is leaking. Does anyone have a ram for sale from Marine Machine. The whole ram or the rod would be greatly appreciated. I will contact [email protected] as noted in a previous post. Thanks

If the pit is in the rod can't you just have someone tig weld the pit out and machine it? If not, a good hydraulic shop should be able to replace the stainless rod.
|
I asked the same thing and was told that he didn’t think so as the rod was “chrome molly”. I also asked about a hydraulic shop to rebuild and was told there are none left around here. I am open to any suggestions and willing to try nearly anything. If you think it could be welded and smoothed out please let me know. I’ll ask.
|
How big is this pit?? Pic?? Have you tried to replace the seals for the rod??
When I had mine rebuilt, they said I had some small nicks in my rod and quoted me like $300 to make a new rod. I declined and no issues since. |
I found a place that says with the dimensions of the rod they will either look for one in stock or make one. So, I will go to the marina tomorrow and see the rod and measure it. Until then I don’t know the size other than the mechanics comment of “huge”. While I’ve asked for a variety of things to be done, it wasn’t until today that they took the ram off and took it apart. Prior to that he was suggesting Lucas sealer, which nearly everyone has said don’t do or a seal kit. After taking the ram off, he says neither a seal kit nor the Lucas sealer will do any good.
|
It should be a common rod size. There is nothing special besides the stainless barrel and caps. My hydraulic shop had everything on the shelf for my rebuild.
|
That would be incredible. I hope you’re right. This is all new to me. So, I am just relaying as I get the information and keep looking to I find a solution.
|
Shoot, Mayfair rams might be the same size internals. Scroll to the bottom.

Mayfair
I spoke to Hardin today who bought Mayfair and he said he had nothing for me. However, I’ll check again. Until I measure it I’m not sure, but it seems to be in between a 8” and a 9”.
|
Don't measure it. Take the entire steering ram to the hyd shop and let them measure, make the rod and reseal it
|
I appreciate the thought, but so far I haven’t found a hydraulic shop near me. The only solution I’ve found so far is to have one made on California. Seeing the measurements they want to have it done, it might be best to send it to them. I am also searching salvage yards and someone who is supposed to have some units in Florida. I will continue to look for a hydraulic shop locally. I agree with your comment, I’m just not sure how to get it done yet.

Latest Update
So I went over to the marina and measured a number of items and got pictures. The distance between the centerline of the two hydraulic fittings is 10.5”.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...8acd506bc.jpeg Here are the dimensions of the shaft. Where not noted differently, they are the same as on the drawing. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...4f9ac94fa.jpeg Here is the picture of the pit. Doesn’t look that big to me, but I am clearly no mechanic https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...f4080cafd.jpeg |
Yeah those pits are going cause it to leak. If they were near and end, no big deal, but they are in the area where the rams will be 90% of the time.
There's hyd shops in every major city https://www.yellowpages.com/charlott...draulic-repair https://www.yellowpages.com/search?s...and+Park%2C+NY |
I am happy to say I have a cylinder on its way. Once I get it, if it works, I will have the old one rebuilt and then put it back on the boat and rebuild the other side. Then keep this new one as a backup.
I was unable to get new rods even though they are pretty close to the Mayfair 9” rods. They are a bit shorter. I did find a hydraulic shop in Syracuse, but the complete cylinder should do the job. I’ll work on the rebuild later or if the cylinder doesn’t fit. Thanks for everyone’s help. I’ll let you know how it goes once it’s installed. |
Griff, Thanks for posting the seal numbers! I had to reseal mine last weekend, did it myself and you made it easy. Much appreciated.
