How about at least 15 MPH-- that is what I gained with my 251 CHECKMATE after the engine build up.

How about 638 HP from a 454. Is that enough for YOU. Stock bottom end, Stock compression, Dart heads Reworked and wedges installed by Jim Valakeo, Dart intake and 850 Holley,Ultradyne roller cam.

you can go to amazon.com or your local book store and ask for BIG BLOCK MARINE PERFORMANCE by DENNIS MOORE.

Tinkerboater, what cam did you use in that 454 to get 638 HP? I am currently helping a friend with his 454 MAG and could use the info. That is some good HP out of a low compression 454. I probably only make a few more than that with my 13:1 compression 496 with fully ported pro1's and a solid roller!! Nice job!!! Please share the cam specs. Thanks, Craig

Years ago, my friend put Merlin rectangle ports on his 454 Mag and used a Crower flat tappet cam. It would run a solid 75-78mph in a 251 Convincer with the AME4000 hull.. a bit lighter than mine. It ran forever with little maintance and it always ran strong.. I have the specs around somewhere... I think it was a Crower 1209 if my memory serves me.. which it usually doesnt..

I no longer have the card for the cam-- hey it was 8 years ago but Jim V. can probably set you up with the right cam.The main problem with the rec. port heads is that the port is to big and it slows down the incoming air flow ( no ram effect ) The oval ports have about the right size port but the angle of entry is poor. So You raise the floor of the rec. port heads about 1/2 inch thus making the port smaller (oval port) to increase the velocity but it also has a much better entry radius into the cylinder so get the best of both heads. You also have to raise the floor of the intake manifold ports 1/2 inch. The cam I ran was a big ( for a 454 ) sollid roller. T he 251 Convincer went from 68 mph to about 83 mph.
