Also - what's popular valve lash on a 502BBC? I've read everything from 1/4 to full turn but looser on marine engines.

depends on the lifter type/brand

cometic and fel pro both recomend using no type of sealer on the mls gasket.i know a lot of people use a sealant and it works.for me,i don,t reuse the gasket and i don,t use a sealant.

What about if you assemble the engine but do NOT fire it, have to remove the heads for some reason, could you then reuse the gasket?

I did that 2 times - put together and never fired then had to take right back apart and didn't have any issue.

I think I'm going to call Cometic and get their take....

Many instructions recommend torquing it down to spec, wait ten minutes then loosen everything up, and then retorque. What you're talking about sounds similar enough, fwiw.

Yes, you can reuse it in this case. I had to do that with mine when my head studs did not seal into the water jackets. I used the wrong type of sealer on the threads, and pressure tested with air to reveal that they were leaking. Pulled the heads back off, reinstalled the studs, and put everything back together. So far so good.

Yeah I figured you could just thought it was a good point to bring up in this thread.

Btw We kept the same gasket on the same head also.

If I needed to reuse my head gaskets I would remove the head bolts in reverse order that I torqued them in.

What if you can't remember the order?
