Default Need some help with my head homework...

I am starting to do my homework on which heads to put on my 383. There willl be a cam change to help with the bigger heads. Dennis moore suggested the "fast burns" from GM which are 210cc intake ports and 2.00/1.55 valves, use these if i want to stay around 5200-5300. But i am going to increase my rpm to around 5500-5600 so i think a little larger head might help. So I have some info on cylinder head makers. I am going to shoot for around 475 hp if possible.. right now i am running the cast iron vortecs..

I have info on these aluminum heads.

Canfield- 220cc. valves 2.08/1.6
AFR -210cc, valves 2.08/1.6
Edelbrock Victor Jr 23degree, 215cc, 2.08/1.6 valves
Brodix track1- 221cc, 2.08/1.6 valves
world products, motown 220cc, 2.055/1.6 valves
Trick flow, 215cc, 2.08/1.6 valves.

These are just ones i found so far.. Let me know what you think. I have no one around here that knows much about heads designs above the normal GM stuff..

What do you run on your SBC?

Thanks for helpin

Travis

The heads you have listed all flow far better than the Vortec heads D. Moore is speaking of. If it were me I would go for a 190 to 200 CC intake runner on a head that has been fully ported. Then you will get the benefit of high velocity at low RPM and still have enough head to turn 6000 RPM if desired. My dads 1988 Baja 196 Sunsport has an 11:1 compression 357" SBC with iron Bowtie heads (180 cc intake and 2.05 intale valve). He is running a 246/254 @ .050" solid roller with .555 lift and he is running 1.6 rocker ratio on the intakes. He has CMI E-tops and uses a holley 800 DP on a Holley strip dominator intake. The heads aren't proted and the motor spins a 26 Spinelli 3 blade prop 6000 RPM all day long and gets top speeds in the low 80's on the gun. His boat is longer than yours and probably weighs a little more. He is running an Alpha SS drive and has never had a problem in the 14 years he has owned the boat. That may be something for you to consider in the SS drive. Nothin like gaining speed with the power you already have. Don't go to large on the intake runner unless you are raising compression to gain some low end or don't care about low RPM performance. 200 CC's are more than enough for a marine 383. My opinion. Good luck!!!

Thanks wette vette.. That info helped alot compression is staying at the 9.8:1 for now atleast. low rpm performance is not very important for me , its not how fast to get up... its how fast ya go by them LOL! I have ben keepin my eye out for a SS drive.. but they are few around.. What gas do you use to run 11:1 on a iron heads?

Thanks again

Travis

We run a 50/50 mix of 110 leaded and 92 pump gas. If we are doing nitrous blasts we run straight 110. The nitrous is a cool rush. 500 RPM at the push of a button. The alpha ss is a sweet drive and I highly recommend trying one sometime. If you boat on a really weedy lake you need to be careful because the low water pick up sucks up weeds and they could plug up the drive. We have lost a couple of impellars due to this and have been ok since we put a water pressure gauge in.

Default Canfield- 220cc. valves 2.08/1.6

Completly difrent use BUT. My engine builder build a lot of sprint car motors and the Canfield's are the only aluminum heads he will use for that purpose??? I was over there a week ago and he had a set of BBC ones still in the box I pulled one out and the machine work from the factory looked great! (they had no valves in them yet) my .02 if it helps Charlie

Wette- the apple doesnt fall far from the tree apparently!!Good advice on the heads. It strikes me as odd that Dennis Moore calls the 230cc head as being best for big blocks and then recommends a 210cc head for a 383!?!...too many variables in this biz to reach true guru status...he does have some nice slants though...a valuble resource yes, guru not!

Yea, there are a million ways to skin a cat, and they all work. Some better than others, as we all know!!! Head volume factors to be considered. (cubic inches, desired RPM, compresion ratio, drive type, boat type and weight, exhaust, intake manifold and carb, and the manner in which the boat will be used.) Then the cam is selected to make the system work. Generally, as D. Moore preaches marine PLESURE BOAT engines are happier with smaller ports and higher low end velocities. Now, race engines, thats another ballgame!!!

I had a chat with tyler crockett this morning about which head to use. He said his choice would be the GM fast burn heads and that i shouldn't put ones on bigger then 210cc. A little bigger cam( if the piston to valve clearance is there) some new EMI risers and i'll be set

now does anyone wanna donate some money LOL!

so if GM fast burns are the ticket.. Would it be smart to look at the "E-Tec 200" edelbrock heads which are about the same design wise. have 200cc's on the intake, 2.02/ 1.6 valves and edelbrock says these out flow the fast burns 10% on the intake side and 17% on the exhaust side..??

thoughts?

or am i just rambling too much

Traviss, I have a pair of SS hanging off the stern of my Nova. As the saying goes, you can have them when you pry them out of my cold dead hands.

They have held up with my 409's just fine. The thoughts on the smaller runners are right. I have 170cc's on my Torquer II's. Idle is good, out of the hole torque is very nice. But I have some limitations somewhere I need to work out. I havent had the boat out in over a month so I havent been able to do any testing. But right now I'm spinning my 22 inch Hydro's at 4500. The boat weights at least 6000 lbs. And I'm seeing 60. So the props are hooking up really well. I don't know if I'm maxing out at 4500 because of my stock flame arrestors, or the heads or both.

When my primaries open there is no gains in rpms or speed so I'm thinking it the arrestors. But I can never check because I always have the kids with me and I don't dare run 60 with them. Too risky.
