Default Water in drive, oil in bilge.

Last time out I had just installed a -2" shorty on my bravo 1 upper. When I got back, there was drive oil in the bellows and bilge, and water in the drive. At first I thought the seals were bad, but now I am having second thoughts. I guess for the amount of oil in the bilge, there would have to be a fair amount of force to push the water in, and the oil out. There is no obvious seal damage to the lower.

Is there something I should be looking for? I'm thinking I did something wrong mating the upper to the lower???

My guess would be the o-ring is off on the drive shaft or water inlet hole, or it was damaged during installation. Items 3 or 18

How high did you trim the drive while running?oil in the bellows leads to the pinion seal letting go.water in bilge could come from a number of places.o-rings on face of drive is one place to start.

Probably number 4 in the pic. Its the little O-ring. Its getting water from the pressure and pushing gear lube out the upper yoke seal into the bellows. Pull just the lower case & replace number 4 O-ring.

Also I have seen alot of the yoke seals leak, not because of a bad seal, but because of a grove that wears into the yoke shaft wear the seal rides. When the drive gets hot & builds pressure , oil gets forced into the bellows. When enough oil gets into the bellows, it leaks through the gimbal bearing & shaft. It can take the grease out of the gimbal bearing & wreck it. Make sure you pump new gimbal bearing grease into it before you run it again.
