Found the problem - called Dave Wesseldyke today to ask what I was doing wrong. Turns out I have the wrong hose. Mine has SS wire under the nylon outer weave.

Koul Tools press is by far one of the best tools that I have ever purchased. It's not cheap at $250, but worth every penny. You can not only lock it in a vice, but you can also take it in the boat with you to make hoses that aren't easily removed.

That's pretty slick.

Too bad they didn't put the screw on the fitting end, could have chucked it in a cordless drill.

I would caution using random lube when installing fittings, I had a few fly off off this summer. I can't even describe the mess it made. Use only what the manufacturer says would be my advice. And that tool would be a good investment.

+1 the twist helps and I use Amsoil Dominator racing oil, slipperiest oil I have tried.
