Default Just curious...

What other choices of non-siamised blocks do we have that are beyond 496 cubic inches? What suffers in a siamised block that is used for endurance purposes? Thanks

Default Siamesed blocks

I don't think there is much wrong with using siamesed blocks for horsepower production. But I think that when it comes to reliability in a regular production engine it would HAVE to be better to have a coolant jacket surrounding the cylinder. It would certainly make the water flow through the engine easier and without as many steam pockets.

I have never had any problems with 502 engines but Chevrolet did redesign the head gaskets for an improvement in cooling (now there is a left and right).

Engines would be a lot more compact with siamese cylinders and I would think that they would be more common if there were no drawbacks.

Chevrolet went to a lot of trouble to design the new 496 without using a siamese block. There must be some good reason why!
