I looked on mercruiser parts.com and it does show gils. the 370/400s had the cast iron log style. Also it shows a dual plane, so I stand corrected. Regarding the cams, it may be a good chance to get some better cams in them as I believe there are better grinds available now that weren't back then even staying flat tappet.

Just had bad luck with the current flat tappets wiping out lobes so I will step up to
roller cams with retro fit lifters.. As you said current cams are way better ..

I know the specs in the service manual for the roller motors are skewed, prob because scoggins dickey sells those cams for 1/3 of merc retail. And they are almost always toast in a motor that has seen water in oil.
But what about the old flat tappets? Everyone had good grinds back in the day for whatever motor came through.
i remember the 440 but i dont remember if it was a stand alone cam grind. Wonder if the merc spec book was truthful on those. Its late but im curious

Same cam was used in the 460 Cyclone also. It was a 482 inch engine, otherwise mostly the same.

Ive just built a set of 440 cyclones (they are in my cig)

From the factory:

They do have gill exhaust
They do have crane gold roller rockers
Came , springs and lifters were originally from crane, and they are still available (I bought them) I have the cam # on the garage
They do have a wiand or performer single plane intakes
Everything in the lower end is forged from the factory
It does have a lopie / rough tough sounding idle at the dock

(you are probably wasting your $$ on rollers your cams (in he past were probably wiped out due to lack of zink in the oil, too tight rockers, bad / crappy lifters, many other reasons) but its your build and your choice

Happened twice already,,high zinc oil, plenty of break in lube,,lightweight springs,,everything done correctly ,,still wiped out the lifters which took out cam and filled engine with crap.. Sorry but Im not risking it again...
